Police on Thursday arrested notorious goon Jasman Rai alias Aswin Kumar who has a lengthy rap sheet. They shot at Rai twice in Bijulibazar, Kathmandu, on Thursday before arresting him.
Rai was shot in his right thigh by a team from the Metropolitan Police Crime Division after he tried to escape. Police had reached there to arrest Rai on extortion charges.
SSP Sarbendra Khanal, chief of the MPCD, said they had to open fire as Rai wielded an iron rod before the police when he was asked to surrender.
Rai is undergoing treatment at Bir Hospital. Doctors said they operated on him to take out the bullets. Hospital director Dr Swoyam Prasad Pandit said Rai needs to remain in hospital for the next few days. Earlier, Rai had been arrested time and again in cases of extortion from hotels, restaurants and parking lots. According to SSP Khanal, Rai had recently thrashed three workers of a hotel in Kathmandu after they asked him to pay his bill. “He has been found extorting money from individuals too,” said SSP Khanal.
“We have adopted a zero-tolerance policy against goons. Rai’s arrest is a part of our campaign against them,” said SSP Khanal.
